My Pennykettle Dragon Story
Chapter 1
The sun was slowly rising in the distance. Gruffin, the family’s guard dragon, watched from the window seal. The sun was only about an inch away from being equal to the big tree in the back yard, where the giant bird had once attacked the squirrel lousy loved. Gruffin wiggled his snought. Not long now, he thought. He heard a rustle in the background as one of the other Pennykettle dragons shifted. The noise came again and Gruffin flicked his tail in disapproval. What part of quiet did they not understand? Then the count down came. Gruffin, eyes practically bigger then his head trying to get a good view, counted in his head. 4, 3, 2… “RHHHH!” Gruffin screamed, “Christmas!!!” Every Pennykettle dragon in the room darted to the doar trying to be the first one down the stairs.
On a shelf, the dragon known as G’raft sat and watched. He had a little smile on his face. Almost one year ago, his master had left him here to be with the other Pennykettle dragons to lurn there ways for a full year. That was all G’raft had wanted for Christmas that year, and now he was glad it was finaly over. Not that he didn’t like the Pennykettle dragons. More the opposite, he loved all his time there! He had lurned so much. But he was glad he could finally return to his companions. Though he was different from all the other moving dragons, they all respected him, even here! But what made him different, was his biggest weekness, but his strongest strength.
The dragons were flying out of the room at full speed. G’raft sighed and, in one quick motion, put his right foot on the edge and pushed his whoal body of the shelf. As he plummeted down, he rememberd the first time he had done that here. All the dragons gaspes and looked away expecting him to crash into thousands of pieces. But at the last possible second he had pulled up avoiding the ground. He had gotten in big trouble from the rest of the dragons, fore they knew and experienced it before. They said it was with Gawain. But all G’raft said is that he can’t live his life in fear of possibly breaking. Anyway, his right horn was already brocken off. And I guess it helped that G’raft was made of plastic, unlike all the other dragons who were made of clay and break easyer. But as that was his strength, it was also his weekness, fore he could not stand in the sun too long or he would melt.
G’raft let out a little laugh under his breth and, when he was half way to the ground, he pulled back with one big flap of his wings and flew out the doar. Then he realised something. He counted the number of dragons. There was one missing! He flew back into the Dragon’s Den and looked around. Then he saw, in the corner to his right, Gryphion the newest dragon. He’s calm and very shy. That’s probably why he had not come. He’s new, doesn’t have many friends yet and, was kinda an expiramental dragon. Expiramental because he is more birdish than dragon. His snout looks kinda beakish, like a bird, and has frills on his head. But the thing that distinguished him the most are his wings and his color. His wings were, unlike the pennykettle dragons wings that were velvety, were so birdlike, with multiple overlapping long scales making them. And his coulor, was the most beautifull and vivid shade of gold any of the dragons had ever seen, but somehow he was still able to blend in.
G’raft flew to the shelf and walked over to Gryphion, who was sitting legs up with his head in them. G’raft walked up to him, and stared down at him. Finally, he looked up. Fore a while, he just stared back, finnaly, He looked up and G’raft extended his hand to him. He looked up, confiused. “Come with me” said G’raft. “I don’t wanna go.” Replied Gryphion. G’raft didn’t move, but thought about it for a second. “Gryphion, what’s Christmas withought a tree? And what’s a tree withought the star on top? Gryphion, you are that star. I know you’re new, and I know you’re realy shy, but spend today with me. My last day, and my Christmas whish is that you join us. What do you say?” Gryphion looked down for a second, then looked back up, looked at G’rafts hand and slowly extended his own. G’raft pulled him up and said, “Your wings are beautifull, but can they fly?” Gryphion thought about it and said, “ I don’t know. And I don’t wanna find out. This shelf is to high. If I fall, I break, unlike you.” G’raft’s smile slowly died as he narrowed his eyes in wonder and slowly tilted his head. “You know?” He asked. Gryphion gave a shy smile. “It’s not that hard to find out. Don’t worry, I wont tell the other dragons.” G’raft’s smile came back, and he said. “Thank you, my golden friend.” Gryphion smiled. G’raft swiftly turned to the the left where he could see the edge of the shelf about 36 inches away. “C’mon” He said. He walked forward and Gryphion followed.
G’raft looked around. They seemed about 17 inches from everything, except to the right where they still had much room. “Now,” said G’raft, turning to face Gryphion. “We will see if you can fly here. If you can stay in the air, especially on spot, you can fly down stairs, no trouble.” Gryphion looked nervious, but trusted G’raft enough. He was something else. He had tought many of the pennykettle dragons new abilities, some he could not yet do himself. Gryphion spread his bird like wings, closed his eyes, and with a fluwid movement flapped with all his might. He flew fore what seemed fore forever and thought he was going so high, he would hit the celing.
When Gryphion thought he could no longer take it, he pushed the back of his wings forward but kept the frunt stiff. He spread his legs and landed peacefully. Gryphion let out a gasp followed by big breaths. “Good,” Said G’raft. “You Got, I’d say an inch off the ground and staid there fore 23 seconds.” Gryphion could not beleve it. It had seemed like so much longer, so much higher! G’raft curcled around Gryphion. G’raft felt a scale on Gryphions wing and rubbed in in between his fingers. “Your wing, though… It felt a lot harder to stay on spot because your wings are better for moving, racing even.” Gryphion deemed confiused. “Why?” G’raft smiled. “Well, look at them. Whale ours are all velvety, your wings have overlapping long scales. Ours stop and controle the air under us, but yours. Yours complement the air. When flying, as in moving around, the air will slide of your wings. You will be as silent as a bat, to.” Gryphion was amazed. All this time, he had thought his wings would make it harder to fly. He was glad that moving when flying would be easyer.
“Now,” said G’raft, “Fly in the air and try to move. But, whatever you do, don’t stop. Only stop if you are about 3 inches or closer to the ground and stop as you did before. That there was a perfect stop.” Gryphion flapped his wings as hard as he could trying to get up, but he was exsosted from before. G’raft saw this, and, slowly pushed Gryphion forward. Then he flew! Easy, fast, and most of all, free! Gryphion had never experienced anything like it before! It was like he was made to live in the air! It was beautyfull. “Look! I’m doing it!” Screamed Gryphion. “Great! Now,” Said G’raft, jumping into the air. “Lets go down stairs. Everyone’s waiting.” G’raft flew about an inch away from Gryphion, keeping an eye on him and trying to stay cought up. G’raft used to be fast when he was with his old master. But when he came here he had started to fly fancier and do tricks more than fast flying. He seemed to have lost his touch. He laughed anyway, because he knew he could never outfly Gryphion.
Finally down the stairs, Gryphion stoped on the coffee table with many other dragons, and G’raft sat next to him. “Merry Christmas everyone!” said Liz, as she walked into the room. To the right, Gryphion overheard Alexis talking to her mom, Zanna. “Look mommy! All the dragons are here! All of them! Even the new one, Gryphion!” Zanna smiled at Gryphion and he smiled back. “He sure is.” She replied. Gryphion waved at Alexis and she waved back, exited that she had cought her attention.
“Now!” Started Liz. “For our Christmas song, where we all pick a newcomer to start the song, we have picked a verry beautifull dragons. She is different from all of the rest of you…” From the second Gryphion heard that, he knew it was Hannah. She was the only one in the house that was “Born” and not “made”. Liz continued. “As you all know, I have made… Almost, all of you,” She looked at G’raft and smiled as he smiled back. “And up to a point, we thought it was impossible to mix elements together. As you all know, Just three years ago, I had made a water element dragon. We did not know at first, but as she hissed a lot,” She looked at Hissy. “She, one day, Spat out so much water, she could have taken a bath in it.” Liz had a big smile on her face as all the dragons, even Hissy herself, laughed. “And we all know Glyoring, the tough fire dragon.” The laughing stoped and Glyoring blue a smoke ring. If we all didn’t know any better, we would swear he was in the military. Hissy squeezed her daughter, Hannah. “This year, he have all picked the Fire/Water elemental dragon, Hannah!” The crowd exploded into RHH!’s and screames.
Hannah walked up to the edge of the coffee table to stand in front of Liz. Liz smiled and said, “Hannah, will you start the song?” Hannah was so happy, she let out a tear. While other Pennykettle dragons would have died, Hannah would only die if she became dehigerated, then cryed, because she is water and fire type.
. Hannah nooded and shlowly turned around. Hannah started the song with a gental hrrrr and slowly the whoal crowd started singing the traditional dragon Christmas song that the humans know as Silent Night. When the song was finally done, Liz thanked Hannah. Hannah bowed her head and, instead of returning to her parents, saw Gryphion sitting with G’raft. Hannah waved to her parents and walked over to Gryphion and G’raft. She looked at Gryphion. “Hi.” She said. Gryphion blushed a little. Before him, Hannah was the newest dragon. She was also, like him and G’raft, different. Gryphion smilled back. “Hi,” Gryphion cleared his throught. “Umm… You were great up there.” Hannah smiled. “Thanks. I was really nervus.” She said. G’raft giggled and walked away. Gryphion gave G’raft a irritated look. Then from the top of the TV, the listener looked up. Lucy looked at him. “What? What’s wrong?” Liz looked at Lucy, then the listener. “rhhh!” He said. Whitch meant turn on the TV.
Liz picked up the remote that was lying beside her and turn on the TV. “rhh-rr-hrrrrr!” said the listener. Liz did as he said and turned it to the news channel. The normal news lady was on telling the news. Liz turned up the volume so everyone in the room could hear. “The snow storm is coming directly from Canada, as you can see, the cold northan winds are making a snowstorm all around the Stats and all flights in and out of the Stats and Canada, we apoligize for the inconviniance. In other news…” Liz muted the TV.
No one said a word for a long while. Everyone knew that G’raft’s master was coming today on one of those flights to finally pick him up. G’raft wasn’t showing it, but he was devastated. For a long time, he just stood there. He missed all his friends. He missed, going to school with his master! Helping her make new dragons! How could this happen!!! G’raft suddenly felt the one thing he thought he was never gonna feel. He puched it back quickly. There’s a reason for everything, he thought.
He looked around and noticed everyone staring at him. The listener seemed like he just wanted to disappear, because he had told Liz to turn on the TV. G’raft put a confiused look on his face with a smile. “What’s everyone lookin’ at? Ain’t we gonna open the presents?” The crowd all moved around to the position where they open the presents. G’raft looked at Liz. Liz was smiling almost with tears in her eyes. She whispered the words “thank you” and got up to get to her position beside the tree. G’raft smiled and flew to the far end.
“Now,” said Liz, picking up the first gift. “It’s time to distribute the gifts. Now, here are many new comers this year.” She looked at everyone in the crowd. “We have a little tradition here. To those who do not know, we will distribute the gifts one by one and open them all at once. Then we show our gifts to our friends and spend the rest of the day doing whatever it is we want to. Some of you, instead of doing whatever, can help with the feast. You, the dragons, have voted for who would do that. You also chose who would help me distribute the gifts. This year, you have chosen…” She opened the sheet. “Grace, the listening dragon,” the crowd chered. “Gadzooks, the wrighter,” the crowd cheared even louder. “And, because it was his last day, G’raft!” Liz through the paper over her sholder. The crowd cheared louder than the two before. Again, g’raft felt that feeling. This was the best present ever. This was so sad and happy at the same time. G’raft smiled and walked up to stand with Grace and Gadzooks. They each grabed a present from under the tree and started to hand them out.
After all the presents were handed out, all the dragons opened them. There were chears from all over as the dragons got exactly what they had wanted from there friends. G’raft looked around, so happy to see everyone so happy. He didn’t even realise there wasn’t a present under the tree for him. The listener walked up to him, with his hands behind his back. He was wearing a knitted Christmas hat that he had wanted for a long time now. “Hi G’raft. I was the one to get you a gift this year. I had gotten you this" he pulled out a present from behind his back. “Well it’s really from all of us.” G’raft took the box and untied the bow and took of the top.
G’raft was amazed with the gift. When did they all get the time to do this without him seeing? In the box was a craft book whit pictures of there times together. And on the front was a photo of all the Pennykettle dragons on a table waving goodbye to him. And on the inside of the book was a signature and a little massage wrighten in dragon touge from all the dragons. There were other pictures like one where G’raft had flown out the window and around the yard. He had gotten in trouble from Liz afterwards. This way, he could always remember the Pennykettle dragons.
“That was really from all of us, it was just my idea. But I kinda have a last minute gift to give you.” Said the listener. He turned around and gesterd for G’raft to follow. They walked to the desk and flew up to the top. There sat Gwendolyn, the computer technician. “Took you long enough,” she said. She got up and slightly moved her foot on the touch pad of the labtop, turning on the screen. She jumped from key to key until she had typed in a search for the “skype” website. She then whent to the search bar and typed in G’raft’s owner’s name. She danced around on the keybord until Audrina finnaly answer.
“Oh my gosh! G’raft!!!” She practicly screamed. “Rhhhh!” was his response. It was dark in the room she was in and it was hard to see her because the only light there was was coming from the screen. He was able to see her put her hand over her mouth and look behind her to see if anyone had heard. “Sorry,” she said. “I’m at my grandma’s house because the flight was cansled.” G’raft smilled. She would not reveal the secret. Not even to her family. It was sweet though, because it kept them all that much safer. “I’m so sorry the flight was cansled, G’raft. They said it might be a few days, even a week before they might be flying again.”
G’raft smiled and let out a laugh. She gave a frown in return. “What?” She said. He answer in dragon language “You’re always like this. You can’t control the airport, and you sertanly can’t controle the wether. At least not like this,” He lifted his hands to demonstrate how big he ment. “You can’t do anything about it yet you still make a big deal.
Liz started to name the dragons that would help with the meal, but G’raft only heard her voice, not what she said. Latter on that day, they had the feast and Liz made an announcement. “O.k. everyone. G’raft will be staying with us a little longer.” She looked at him. “And I’m glad you are.” She looked at Gryphion. “You’re always good with newcomers. This year, We’ve got another special dragon! His name is Gabriel.” She turned around. “Gabriel!” a small dragon walked in. “Gabriel, named after the angle, is out special Christmas dragon!”
Gabriel was white and black. His scales were a beautifull white that made you feel like even the littlest speck of dust could ruen it for good. He had black, wavy spikes on his back. His claws and thorns on his head were black. He had black wings that somehow looked anglelike and deep blue eyes, the color of the most perfectly beautiful ocean. He had his hands together in frunt of him, but he didn’t look to shy. Like he was trying to impress Liz… or the girls. There was something odd about him.
He looked around the crowd and stoped at Gryphion. He stared at him for a wile, until Gryphion looked down. G’raft stepped in frunt of Gryphion and stared down at Gabriel. Gabriel stared back with a meen look on his face. He let out a little “hrrr” under his breth and turned around, closing his eyes as if they had tied. G’raft let out a little “hrrr” and turned around. Gryphion looked at him and whispered. “What did you do?” G’raft turned around. “There’s something up with him! I know it…” Hannah, who was standing beside G’raft turned around to face him. “Like what? He seems nice.” G’raft laughed. “They always do at first. He’s not what he appears.” Hannah’s eyes grew big. “You’re not saying that Liz made an evil dragon? A darkling? Are you?” G’raft let out a “hump.” He closed his eyes. “Let me tell you a little story. Back at home, I was my owners little helper dragon. She would take me everywhere. I learnt that, one, even the nicest of people have some bad in them, and it will fight to come out.”
Gryphion looked confiused. “What does this have to do with Gabriel?” G’raft roled his eyes. “Let me finish. The other thing is that she would always let me watch TV with her. Her favourite TV show was Wizards Of Waverly Place. There was many episodes that would show my point. Like the one with Steve.” Hannah looked confiused. “Steve?” G’raft looked iratated. “Yes. Now let me finish. Steve became friends with the main character, Alex. They were both trouble makers, and wizards. But Alex wasn’t evil. One day, she found out Steve was really evil and pretending to be good…” Gryphion was really into the story. “Then what happened!?” G’raft shrugged and lifted his hands in a I don’t know form. “Alex joined Steve but at the last second the beet Steve, turning her to stone and Max kinda pushed her and she brooke to pieces. It doesn’t matter.” Hannah looked confiused. “But at the end it all worked out. What would it matter if they all got there happy ending?”
G’raft slapped a hand on his face and shock his head. “O.K… Other story now. Um… Oh ya! The angle!” Gryphion was so confiused. “What? An Angle?” G’raft smiled. “Kinda. See Alex’s older brother, Justin fell in love with a girl he thought was an angle. But she turned out to be an angle of darkness.” “Angle of darkness? What’s that?” “Glad you asked, Hannah. An angle of darkness is an angle who has gone bad. They have the power to influence people into doing bad things. You can tell them apart because of there night black.” Gryphion looked at Gabriel. He was shaking hands with some of the dragons, his night black wings folded in. Gabriel stared at Gryphion. G’raft continued his story. “The angle, Rosy, turned Justin evil and got him to steel the moral compass that turns the world evil or good and turned it to evil. The whoal world turned evil.” Hannah looked back at G’raft. “Then what happened!?” G’raft twisted his episodes. “The head angle of darkness locked Alex and her friend Harper in a room and opened a black hole and they got sucked in.” It wasn’t completely a lie. He did get Felix to open a black hole and they did get sucked in… back to the wizards lair, though.
“Wow. I guess you’re right.” Said Hannah. She looked at Gabriel, still meting the other dragons. “What do we do?” She asked. G’raft looked from Hannah to Gryphion and back. “Do nothing.” He said. “What!? We can’t do nothing if the other dragons are maybe in trouble!” said Gryphion. “Shhhht! Do you want every dragon in this house to know we don’t trust one of Liz’s dragons!?” Hannah and Gryphion shook there heads. “We do nothing but observe him. We can’t just go and acuse him yet of somothing he did not do. But we’ll keep an eye on him. Twenty-fore seven if we have to.” Gryphion and Hannah agreed.
It was after supper when all the dragons of the house finnaly settled down. They were all scattered all over the house. Some in the living room, some in the kitchen, some in the dragon’s den. Gryphion and Hannah were discussing about Gabriel. “What sould we do?” asked Hannah. Gryphion did not know. He was wondering the same thing all day long. “We do nothing, just like G’raft said. We don’t wanna get cought.” Hannah seemed upset. She got up and looked at Gryphion with an angry expretion. “Well you can sit here and do nothing,” She jestered with her hands aroung the dragon’s den. “but I’m not gonna let the ones I love be hurt by somme… some dragon!”
Gryphion got up. “Hannah,” He was cut off when none other than Gabriel flew past him to Hannah. He took her by the hands and looked her in the eyes. At first Hannah seemed surprised but then she seemed agrevated. “Oh, it’s you.” She said with a bitter tone in her voice. “Hannah, is it?” he said. Hannah let out a little growl to herself. “What about it, hotshot?” Gabriel’s smile grew even bigger. “I’ve seen you when I first arrived. You were… wow.” Hannah suddenly stoped frowning and looked surprised. She slowly got into a smile as she said “Oh. You really think so?” She giggled. Gabriel smiled like he had just won a war he knew he could not loose.
Gryphion felt rage take over him. This was not happening!!! For the first time in his life, Gryphion desided to stand up. “Hey!” He said, and emidiatly regretted it. Gabriel turned his head and looked at him with an annoyed frenchish look. Hannah moved to the left to see Gryphion and gave him an angry look. “Yes?” said Gabriel. Gryphion could not take his eyes of Hannah. “What d- Wha-“ He looked down and shook his head and looked back at Gabriel, being carefull to not look at Hannah. He had a new anger in him at the thought of Hannah and Gabriel together!!! “What do you think you’re doing!? We were talking here!” Gabriel seemed to dislike this “Oh, I’m sorry,” he said with a bit of sarcasum. He turned to Hannah, “I must go, I don’t think your friend likes me well. I will meet you tonight. On the roof?” Hannah smiled. He rased his right hand and kissed her hand. Hannah giggled and answered “k”. Gabriel droped her hands and smiled to her. He turned to the edge, waving goodbye to Gryphion then flue away.
Gryphion blew a smoke ring and turned to leave. He only got a few feet away when Hannah stoped him. “What the heck’s the matter with you!?” She screamed. Gryphion turned around fast on his right foot. “Me!? Me!?! Nothing! You’re the one that’s hatting this dragon one second then when he acts all romantic you just melt like putty in his hands!” Hannah opened her mouth big, like she didn’t know what to say or where to start. “Well… Okay first of all, I didn’t hate him! Second, you shouldn’t judge people. Give him a chance! Third, I am NOT like putty in his hands! Why are you so upset all of a sudden!?”
Gryphion had many answers bouncing around in his head, but the most obvius one that came to his mind was Because I Like You but he couldn’t bring himself to say it. They had just met and she was obviously falling for someone else. Gryphion just closed his eyes and turned around. “It doesn’t matter, anyway. Not anymore.” Hannah seemed surprised by that answer. When Gryphion walked away to the edge of the desk, Hannah just stood there. She shook her head eliminating what she thought he thought. She turned around and walked towards the edge. She had to get ready for her date. She thought this date better give me some information about Gabriel. Otherwise this is all for nothing. She flew off.
After a time, she walked onto the roof. She saw Gabriel already waiting for her. Lets get this over with she thought. I can’t believe I’m going through all this trouble just to prove he’s evil. Hannah walked up to Gabriel. He turned around, holding a bouckey of multy colored flowers. Hannah stopped hi her tracks. “Oh. They’re beautifull!” she said Gabriel smiled. “They don’t compare to you, though.” He took her hand and took her to the edge of the roof. It was a full moon and the tempature was perfect, despite the fact that it was Christmas. Gabriel handed Hannah the flowers. Hannah took a big sniff of the flowers. She instantly felt her eyelids closing and her head leening on Gabriel. She couldn’t move the flowers from her face no matter how hard she tried. She finally gave into the spell. She felt herself instantly get lighter and she droped the flowers. She grabbed Gabriel’s arm and together they watched the moon and the stars.
At the other side of the chimany, Gryphion grew angry. He had just climed up to see Hannah drop something and grab Gabriel’s arm. The way he wished she would do to him. She understood him like no one hade before, other than G’raft. And he was leaving soon and Hannah was with him! Where would he be then? What does he see in that looser, anyway!? Gryphion turned around. Hunh. If she want’s to be with him, so be it! He walked away back into the house.
